Work work work work!

Over the weekend I began reviewing notes that I obtained while participating in a mentoring programme called Cayman Finance Student Education & Work Experience Programme 2017. This mentoring programmed has been put on by Cayman Finance.

Cayman Finance is an organisation that helps to promote develop and represent the Cayman Islands financial services industry. Cayman Finance also works closely with the Cayman Islands Government.

The programme runs for nine weeks, so far I have attended five workshops all geared on Cayman’s Financial Services Sector. These workshops are very informative; they give you a basic but general idea on the different areas of the financial services industry and how it works.

It was interesting to note that the Cayman Islands financial services employees roughly 2,000 people which includes Accountants, IT Professionals, Administrative Professionals, Lawyers, Fund Administrators, just to name a few; and that The Cayman Islands is still amongst one of the world’s leading international Financial Centres.

After each workshop you are scheduled to meet with a mentor, unfortunately my first mentor had to back out unexpectedly, I was then matched with a second mentor where we had two sessions then he had to back out of the programme unexpectedly. I am currently assigned to a third mentor he helped me to prepared for a mock job interview.

The mentors are put in place to help you review the notes from the workshop as well as a variety of topics such as what a career in financial services is like, how do you reach the type of career you would like, how can your skills and interests translate into an enjoyable career in financial services, etiquette for the professional workplace.

I must admit that I have not had much success in these areas with my mentor and felt as if I did not grasp the information when having a face to face. Hopefully my third mentor will be able to go over these topics with me. We’ll just have to see. I hope Cayman Finance will look into this part of their programme and place mentors who are readily available and committed.

There are a few more workshops to be held and currently interviews for job placements are being held. I was hoping to get placed with an accounting firm but I have been placed at a law firm which I am looking forward to beginning, but first I have to get through the interview.

Wish me luck.
